ナイジェリア、イボ族のマスク。
一昨年に彫ったこちらのマスクに、彩色をしてみました。

下地には、胡粉を膠で溶いた白い絵の具を塗ります。その後は「雑に塗る」を心掛けながら色を塗り重ねていきます。綺麗に塗ると、アフリカンマスクのような味わいが出てきません。その加減、つまり雑に塗る、ということが難しかったです。

マスクの裏側は、漆で塗りました。2度塗りです。漆のお陰で、この裏面もいい味わいが出ています。

2年前に彫ったマスクが、彩色を経て、さらに蘇ったような気がして、私はとても嬉しいです。
